Plug-in cars are inevitable. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins. Veteran automakers, oil companies, and federal and state governments have been both the prime movers and obstacles to plug-in cars in the past and they remain so today. Here's my June column.

The EPA rates fuel economy at 31 mpg city/28 highway/30 combined. There are four driver-selectable settings of EV, Eco, Sport and Sport+. EV runs solely on electricity for about a half mile and/or only up-to 25 miles per hour. The shelf-like LED rear tail lights continue the L-shape design cue. Movin’ on up.

On 15 Sep, NHTSA and the US EPA proposed a joint rulemaking on fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions for light duty vehicles: an average new car 34.1 mpg and 250 g CO 2 /km for model year 2016. mpg if the automotive industry were to meet this CO 2 level just through fuel economy improvements.) In the future, utilities will pay you to plug-in your vehicle. Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit.
