The intent is to provide the utility and its customers benefits, including load leveling, back-up power, support for plug-in electric car deployment as well as grid regulation and improved distribution line efficiencies. CES holds the promise of being an integral component of the smart grid.

Planned production would be 5,000 cars in the first year of production, moving up to 50,000+ within three years. Aurica is trying to obtain Federal economic stimulus funding to convert NUMMI to electric car manufacturing, but is also open to private financing. Aurica envisions a battery swap in 3 minutes or less.

Ener1 also develops commercial fuel cell products through its EnerFuel subsidiary and nanotechnology-based materials and manufacturing processes for batteries and other applications through its NanoEner subsidiary. European automakers are really setting the pace in terms of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle development.

A123Systems has raised $69 million from GE and other investors to accelerate the expansion of its US lithium-ion battery manufacturing and smart grid capabilities. The announcement coincides with GE’s submission this week for federal stimulus dollars from the US Department of Energy. GE has invested more than $150 million to develop advanced battery technologies, including the high-energy density, sodium-based chemistry battery that will provide energy storage for several future product applications.

We noted in December that the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, was working to update standards for the interface between plug-in electric cars and the grid, and planned to agree on a set within months. And for this ecosystem to be robust, there must be commonality, especially when owners are plugging into the electrical grid.
