During rush hour, the skies over a large city, such as Dubai or Madrid or Los Angeles, would swarm with hundreds, and eventually thousands, of eVTOL “air taxis.” To clear an aircraft for commercial flight, the FAA actually requires three certifications: one for the aircraft itself, one for its operations, and one for its manufacturing.

We carried out our first flight demonstration on 11 October 2022, when we flew a Bell 407GXi helicopter (supplied by consortium member Bell Textron) as a stand-in for a future electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicle, or eVTOL. Imagine air taxis, air ambulances, and cargo vehicles whisking people and goods over our cities and beyond.
