Together with other highly-flexible controllable systems in the BMW Group production network, they will contribute to the stability of the public grid outside of the plant. Electricity generation from variable renewable electricity sources (VRE) such as wind and solar power has grown rapidly and is expected to continue to do so.

The new gigafactory increases Northvolt’s pipeline of battery manufacturing capacity under development to more than 170 GWh. If you use coal in your production, you embed a fair amount of CO 2 into your battery, but if we use clean energy, we can build a very sustainable product. It matters how we produce a battery cell.

While the current facility feeds pure hydrogen (“WindGas”) directly into the gas grid, the new methanation plant provides for the generation of “green” methane. In this second stage, hydrogen from regenerative energy sources is converted into methane (CH 4 ), i.e. synthetic natural gas, using CO 2 from a bio-ethanol plant.

The Audi e-gas plant in the city of Werlte in Lower Saxony ( earlier post ) produces CO 2 neutral-fuel (synthetic methane from water, renewable electricity and CO 2 ); it now also contributes toward stabilizing the public power grid. This has resulted in the plant being accepted under the direction of grid operator Tennet TSO GmbH.
