2020 Kia Soul EV First Drive: 243 electric miles in the box

Green Car Reports

I’m snaking the 2020 Kia Soul EV around a bend in the Korean countryside, happy to push faster after weathering Seoul’s famous morning traffic earlier, but I can’t escape two recurring thoughts. The first is that, if anything, real-time range estimates are conservative, or at the very least, nearer to the real world than ever.

NC State study finds non-FFV vehicles can adapt to mid-level ethanol blend

Green Car Congress

A study by a team from North Carolina State University, with colleagues from the Urban Air Initiative and 3DATX Corporation, has shown that non-FFVs (flexible-fuel vehicles) can adapt to a mid-level ethanol blend—specifically E27. Is hydrogen internal combustion a better idea than fuel cells?

Green Car Reports

Although hydrogen—and hydrogen fuel cells—could still play an important role in future transportation, even many hydrogen advocates will admit that hydrogen internal combustion probably won't. MIT team proposes flex-fuel gasoline-alcohol engine PHEV long-haul trucks

Green Car Congress

In a paper being presented at WCX SAE World Congress Experience in Detroit this week, a team from MIT is proposing the use of a flex-fuel gasoline-alcohol engine approach for a series-hybrid powertrain for long-haul Class 8 trucks. In this approach the engine would provide comparable (or possibly greater) efficiency than a diesel engine while also providing around 90% lower NO x emissions than present cleanest diesel engine vehicles.

With the Volt discontinued, how should Chevy use the name now? Take our Twitter poll

Green Car Reports

The Chevrolet Volt has one of the all-time great names for a plug-in car—even better than its former European sibling the Opel Ampera, based on sales at least. The company even used the name on an experimental plug-in hybrid wagon in 1980. It would be a shame to see such a great electric-car name go to waste—perhaps almost as much as.

EEA: almost all Euro car makers met specific 2017 CO2 targets on new sales, but emissions up year-on-year

All but three European car manufacturers met their specific emission targets in 2017, based on current European vehicle test rules. Nevertheless, average carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from new cars sold in the European Union in 2017 rose by 0.4g of CO 2 per km from 2016, according to final data published by the European Environment Agency (EEA). This increase brings car manufacturers further away from their 2021 targets.
