USDA has funded 8 additional biorefineries that are using feedstocks such as agriculture residue, woody biomass, municipal solid waste, and algae in states including Michigan, Oregon, Florida, Nevada, and New Mexico.

Another trick that can be done with a heat pump (in cabin heating mode, anyway) is to capture the waste heat from the traction inverter, motor, etc, extending the temperature range over which it can operate without resorting to a backup source such as a resistance heater.
