Volvo Cars is the first car maker to sign up to the SteelZero initiative , which aims to increase demand for fossil-free steel and accelerate a transition to carbon neutrality in the global steel industry. The SteelZero signing is the latest initiative by Volvo Cars to address one of car making’s most intensive sources of CO2 emissions.

The Volvo C30 Electric is equipped with three climate systems: one supplies the passengers with heating or cooling; one cools or warms the battery pack as necessary; and the electric motor and power electronics are water-cooled. It is also possible to run the climate unit on electricity from the batteries.

Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a division of Nel ASA, has received a purchase order for a 20MW alkaline water electrolyzer from Ovako , a leading European manufacturer of engineering steel. To support its climate initiatives and new technology investments, Ovako will add a climate surcharge on its steel from January 2022.

Volvo Cars was named the best car make in Sustainable Brands, Sweden’s biggest sustainability survey for various brands. In 2011, Volvo Cars made it to the very top among the 18 car brands included in the survey. Volvo Personbilar Sverige reports that it has now sold almost 100,000 such cars on the Swedish market.

Volvo Cars, A-hus and Vattenfall recently launched the six-month One Tonne Life project—an attempt by a family (the Lindells) to cut their carbon dioxide yearly emissions from seven tonnes per person to a more sustainable one tonne. Volvo has provided a C30 Electric ( earlier post ) for use in the project.
