kWh battery is charged, there is no sound upon pressing the start button as the Escape PHEV defaults to electric mode. If it is cold outside or the battery charge is low, then the engine kicks-in as it does under heavy acceleration. EV Charge mode charges the battery while driving, generating electric-only miles.
