Harvard study finds human health risks from Canadian hydroelectric projects

Green Car Congress

The works uses factors such as soil carbon and reservoir design to forecast methylmercury increases for 22 hydroelectric reservoirs under consideration or construction in Canada. Developing Canadian hydroelectric resources is a key component of North American plans for meeting future energy demands with a low carbon footprint.

DOE to Award $106M to Six CO2 Conversion Projects; $156M in Matching Private Funding

Green Car Congress

The US Department of Energy has selected six projects for funding that aim to find ways of converting captured carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources into useful products such as fuel, plastics, cement, and fertilizers. The host site for the pilot project is Cedar Lane Farms in Wooster, Ohio. DOE Share: $6,239,542).

DOE, RTI to Design and Build Coal Syngas Cleanup System for IGCC Power Plants to Reduce Cost of Removing Contaminants, Capturing CO2; Potential for Synthetic Chemicals and Fuels

Green Car Congress

DOE and RTI will design, build, and test a warm gas cleanup system—based on RTI’s high-temperature syngas cleanup technology—to remove multiple contaminants from coal-derived syngas. A novel process to convert the extracted sulfur to a pure elemental sulfur product will also be tested. Click to enlarge. of the sulfur from the syngas.

EPA proposes rule for nationwide 30% cut in GHG from existing power plants by 2030 relative to 2005

Green Car Congress

Specifically, the EPA is proposing state-specific rate-based goals for carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector, as well as emission guidelines for states to use in developing plans to attain the state-specific goals. Lower the electric system’s overall carbon intensity by shifting generation among existing EGUs.
