The big issue with sodium-ion batteries is that they can store only about two-thirds of the energy of Li-ion batteries of equivalent size. Read the C&EN research here Lithium right now is very expensive and Sodium is quite cheap. Also sodium is universally available. So there are lots of advantages for sodium-Ion batteries.
