The Australian, Japanese and Victorian governments and a consortium of companies have launched the pilot of an innovative supply chain that will deliver liquefied hydrogen from the Latrobe Valley in Australia to Japan. The plant will be the first hydrogen liquefaction facility in Australia for demonstration purposes.

Australia’s CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia’s national science agency) and Australia Pacific LNG (a coal seam gas to LNG joint venture between Origin and ConocoPhillips) have launched a new research alliance to support the development of the coal seam gas (CSG) industry.

bp and thyssenkrupp Steel have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on the development of long-term supply of low-carbon hydrogen and renewable power in steel production, helping accelerate the steel industry’s wider energy transition. The steel and energy industries have of course long been closely linked.

BG Group has approved implementation of the first phase of a US$15-billion project to convert coal seam gas (CSG) to LNG—the first major commercial project to do so. First LNG exports are planned to commence from 2014, underpinned by agreements in Chile, China, Japan and Singapore for the purchase of up to 9.5 mtpa of LNG.
