NASA has selected four university-led teams for potential awards in the agency’s University Leadership Initiative (ULI) that will have them spend up to five years exploring novel ideas for improving aviation, including eliminating emissions and autonomy research in support of Advanced Air Mobility. In July 2019, MTD was awarded a $1.45-million MTD is the public transportation provider in the Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy regions of Illinois, also serving the University of Illinois. Since 1993, New Flyer has delivered 175 buses to MTD; the MTD fleet is currently 85% hybrid.

Bardeen brought his box to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, when he joined the faculty in 1951. Dallesasse’s mentor at Illinois was Holoynak , whose mentor was Bardeen.

Seven projects will be supported, three led by teams at DOE National Laboratories and four by Universities. Funding for the new projects will total $8 million in Fiscal Year 2019. These projects will develop widely applicable open source software utilizing DOE’s current leadership class and future exascale computing facilities.
