European Council and Parliament agree to limit sulfur content of marine fuels to 0.5% for all ships by 2020

European governments have agreed on legislation to limit the maximum sulfur content of marine fuels to 0.5% (5,000 ppm) for all ships from 2020, down from currently 3.5% as from 1 January 2015. According to the compromise, member states should endeavor to ensure the availability of the required marine fuels.
