From 2011 to 2015, California experienced its worst drought on record, with a parching combination of high temperatures and low precipitation. Although ozone in the stratosphere protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation, at ground level the molecule is a harmful air pollutant to humans, animals and plants.

After ten years in orbit, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite has been in orbit sufficiently long to show that people in major US cities are breathing less nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen dioxide pollution, averaged yearly from 2005-2011, has decreased across the United States.

First, we update existing damage estimates with the most recent available comprehensive national emissions data: EPA’s 2014 National Emissions Inventory (NEI). Second, the analysis tracks damages by economic sector over 3 NEI years, 2008, 2011, and 2014.

HFCs are chemicals are potential substitutes for ozone-depleting and climate-warming CFCs and HCFCs currently being phased out under the Montreal Protocol treaty to protect the ozone layer. The United States, Mexico, and Canada also proposed a similar amendment.
