The total number of diesel retrofit devices (for both on-road and off-road diesel engines) sold in the US (including California) by Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association ( MECA ) member companies in 2008 was 31,283, according to the latest MECA annual survey. This total also includes 6,914 retrofit closed-crankcase filters.

and California-based Coda Automotive have entered into a joint venture (Coda Battery Systems LLC) to design, manufacture and sell automotive-grade, lithium-ion battery systems in the United States. In 2007, Yardney received two federal awards totaling $200,000 for developing lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid electric vehicles.

The automotive industry is living proof that private companies will rarely change their behaviors without a significant stimulus to that change, and furthermore one that needs to be mandated. Without the CAFE standard and stimulus monies to promote green vehicle tech, the industry would not be headed toward a greener horizon.

Average US pump prices for regular gasoline are likely to exceed $3 per gallon at times during the driving season, according to EIA, and already exceed $3 per gallon in some areas such as California. This summer, the stimulus to demand from the continuing modest economic recovery is constrained by the projected $0.48-per-gallon
