Researchers in China investigate use of coal as source of lithium

Green Car Congress

Coal could become a major source of the metal lithium, according to a review of the geochemistry by scientists from Hebei University of Engineering in China published in the International Journal of Oil, Gas and Coal Technology. Indeed, the extraction of lithium from coal would offer an ironic twist to its continued use.

BP Statistical Review finds global oil share down for 12th year in a row, coal share up to highest level since 1969; renewables at 2%

Green Car Congress

Oil demand grew by less than 1%—the slowest rate amongst fossil fuels—while gas grew by 2.2%, and coal was the only fossil fuel with above average annual consumption growth at 5.4% Coal was again the fastest growing fossil fuel with predictable consequences for carbon emissions; it now accounts for 30.3% globally, and 8.4%

MIT Report Finds Natural Gas Has Significant Potential to Displace Coal, Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Role in Transportation More Limited

Green Car Congress

Natural gas will play a leading role in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions over the next several decades, largely by replacing older, inefficient coal plants with highly efficient combined-cycle gas generation, according to a major new interim report out from MIT. The first two reports dealt with nuclear power (2003) and coal (2007).

Enel Launches Industrial-Scale Hydrogen-Fueled Power Plant

Green Car Congress

Enel has inaugurated an industrial-scale hydrogen-fuelled combined cycle power plant at Fusina (Venice, Italy). The efficiency of the process is increased by taking the heat from the emissions in order to generate high-temperature steam, which is sent to the nearby coal-fired plant to generate an additional 4 MW of power capacity.

Tesla’s most-sustainable cryptocurrency options aren’t plentiful but they are ideal

Teslarati

“We are concerned about rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel,” Musk wrote in a Twitter post last night. Tesla’s mission when it was established in 2003 was to “accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.”

per year since 2003, excluding the credit crunch years). The emissions increase in the United States in 2013 (+2.5%) was mainly due to a shift in power production from gas back to coal together with an increase in gas consumption due to a higher demand for space heating. The consumption of oil products increased by 1.7%

As a result, the use of coal from small local mines is included in the provincial statistics, but not in the national statistics. Similarly, consumption of oil by a large number of non-state-owned small refineries before 2003 was counted only in the provincial statistics, but not by the national statistics.
