BMW Group to procure low-carbon steel from Salzgitter AG for European plants; second low-carbon steel deal

Green Car Congress

In October 2001, the group announced an agreement with Swedish startup H2 Green Steel. Electricity from renewable sources and its use in production of hydrogen from electrolysis are key elements of the transformation. This green hydrogen will replace the coal currently used in the conventional blast-furnace process.

EIA: US energy-related CO2 dropped 2.7% in 2015; of end-use sectors, only transportation increased

Green Car Congress

Specific circumstances, such as the very warm fourth quarter of 2015 and relatively low natural gas prices, put downward pressure on emissions as natural gas was substituted for coal in electricity generation. Coal’s share of total electricity generation in the power sector fell from 54% in 1990 to 34% in 2015.

Rio Tinto, Paul Wurth and SHS-Stahl-Holding-Saar partner on low-carbon iron feedstock for steel; HBI from green hydrogen

Green Car Congress

The HBI can be used in electric arc furnaces (EAF) to replace scrap metal or in blast furnaces to replace coke (produced from coal) and iron ore. Conversion to green hydrogen from renewable energy sources will take place once available in sufficient quantities and at an economical cost. Earlier post.).

Annual Increase in Global CO2 Emissions Halved in 2008; Decrease in Fossil Oil Consumption, Increase in Renewables Share

Green Car Congress

In addition to high oil prices and the financial crisis, the increased use of new renewable energy sources, such as biofuels for road transport and wind energy for electricity generation, had a noticeable and mitigating impact on CO 2 emissions. Biofuels and other renewable energy sources start impacting CO 2 trends.
