Coal’s share of total electricity generation in the power sector fell from 54% in 1990 to 34% in 2015.

Another major shift is that China has become a voracious energy importer, especially of coal and liquefied natural gas. Like the United States, China has become among the world’s largest importers of oil, gas and coal.

In addition to high oil prices and the financial crisis, the increased use of new renewable energy sources, such as biofuels for road transport and wind energy for electricity generation, had a noticeable and mitigating impact on CO 2 emissions. The continent was mostly powered by locally mined coal until the 1950s, when imports of cheap Middle Eastern oil started transforming the energy picture. Since 2001, though, only the Norwegian gas output has kept on growing. The drop was steep enough to force Germany to produce more electricity from coal than from wind in 2021.
