6 DOE-funded applied battery research projects targeting Li-ion cells with >200 Wh/kg for PHEVs and EVs

Green Car Congress

The objective of the projects is to develop cells that provide more than 200 Wh/kg energy density, along with long cycle life and excellent abuse tolerance to enable 40-mile-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EVs). With one HCMR type in production (XP), Envia has two others in R&D (XE and XLE). The projects end in 2015.

High-performance micro-sized Si-C composite for Li-ion anodes offers high tap density for high volumetric capacity

Green Car Congress

A team at Penn State University has synthesized a micro-sized silicon-carbon (Si-C) composite consisting of interconnected Si and carbon nanoscale building blocks as anode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Unfortunately, the tap density of nano-sized materials is generally low, which in turn holds down their volumetric capacity.
