Wind and solar parks produce a large portion of their energy. Then, as now, wind farms are operating off the world’s coasts—but not all of these offshore sites are connected to the mainland via underwater power cables. Some of the wind farms instead sit in clusters more than 100 kilometers out at sea.

The station, called Fengning and located about 200 kilometers north of Beijing, will store up to 40 gigawatt-hours of energy, and help keep the grid on clean energy when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun’s not shining. The components are for startup NuScale , whose design promises to drastically reduce cost and installation time.

Low-income and rural communities suffered the most, with some remaining without power for almost a year. A microgrid is like a miniaturized, tightly controlled version of a power grid. Next year, we plan to install and further test our controller on-site in the central Puerto Rican community of Adjuntas.
