In 1997 in Japan, TMC launched the Coaster Hybrid EV gasoline-electric hybrid minibus in August and the Prius, the following December.

In Europe, it was smaller Jeeps—the subcompact Renegade and compact Compass family SUV—that got their plugs first. The Wrangler 4xe (pronounced “four-by-e”) will become Jeep’s third plug-in hybrid for Europe, where far more stringent emission rules encourage plug-in cars of all types. The two couldn’t be more different.

In June, Volvo unveiled its smallest and cheapest SUV, the EX30 ( see our revie w ). The Swedish automaker calls the electric SUV a “cornerstone” of its EV plans. With “above-expected order rates,” Volvo will build the EX30 at its Ghent, Belgium plant (in addition to China) to meet the growing demand in Europe for low-cost EVS.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric minivan has been coming to North America for a long, long time. It’s been on sale in Europe for a year, as has the Cargo commercial-van variant. It’s longer than the one sold in Europe, has a genuine third row of seats, a larger battery and a more powerful motor, and available all-wheel drive.
