With an annual potential production capacity of 60 GWh, Northvolt Drei will deliver a supply of sustainably produced lithium-ion batteries to the European market, sufficient for some one million electric vehicles. The new gigafactory increases Northvolt’s pipeline of battery manufacturing capacity under development to more than 170 GWh.

The researchers manufactured a set of lithium-ion battery (LiB) cells containing a specially designed, fast-charging and discharging electrolyte. They drained 15 times the battery’s optimal capacity, the total amount of energy it could store, for 45 seconds to simulate the discharge needed during vertical takeoff.

The Audi e-gas plant in the city of Werlte in Lower Saxony ( earlier post ) produces CO 2 neutral-fuel (synthetic methane from water, renewable electricity and CO 2 ); it now also contributes toward stabilizing the public power grid. This has resulted in the plant being accepted under the direction of grid operator Tennet TSO GmbH.

While the current facility feeds pure hydrogen (“WindGas”) directly into the gas grid, the new methanation plant provides for the generation of “green” methane. In this second stage, hydrogen from regenerative energy sources is converted into methane (CH 4 ), i.e. synthetic natural gas, using CO 2 from a bio-ethanol plant.
