After realising the potential of hybrids early on, Honda has been a little late to join the electric car party with its Fit EV. Just as with the MINI E, BMW ActiveE and Honda's own FCX Clarity fuel-cell.

It has been nearly ten years since MINI took a significant, pioneering step with the MINI E ( earlier post ) and laid the foundations at the BMW Group for the development of electric mobility solutions to production readiness. More than 600 MINI E cars entered service worldwide for the purpose of the field studies.

The web was buzzing last week with stories about BMW’s MINI E. To recap, BMW will be leasing 500 MINI Es from dealers in New York, New Jersey and Southern California starting some time early in 2009. Those of us familiar with powerful EVs were curious where the drive train for the MINI E originated.

In 2008, MINI was a trailblazer for electromobility in the BMW Group. The MINI E was produced in a small series and used in a field trial to gather important insights into the use of an all-electric car in everyday traffic. Electrified vehicles now account for 10% of MINI sales.

The BMW Group is organizing its electrical and urban mobility efforts within project i, an initiative from its Number ONE strategy. The first output of project i was the MINI E, which is currently in a large-scale field trial with about 600 vehicles in the US, UK, and Germany. Earlier post.).

Ford has done it's share of electric cars, including the Ranger EV and Th!nk nk City that were its ZEV mandate cars in the '90s. The #2 US automaker has made a few plug-in hybrid Escape Hybrids that have been in a test fleet at Southern California Edison for about 18 months. All eyes are fixed on 2011.
