The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its annual Automotive Trends Report , which shows that model year (MY) 2021 vehicle fuel economy remained at a record high—but flat with MY 2020 fuel economy—while CO 2 emission levels reached a new record low. EPA released the latest edition of its annual report on trends in CO 2 emissions, fuel economy and powertrain technology for new personal vehicles in the US. Among the top-level findings was that Model year 2013 vehicles achieved an average of 24.1 mpg increase over the previous year and an increase of nearly 5 mpg since 2004.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation has issued a warning about the NHTSA’s proposed fuel economy standards for 2027-2032 model year vehicles. As per the group, if the new proposed fuel economy standards are finalized, the industry’s transition to electric vehicles would be compromised.

NHTSA currently projects that the proposed standards would require an industry fleet-wide average for passenger cars and light trucks of roughly 58 miles per gallon (mpg) in MY 2032 and an industry fleet-wide average for HDPUVs of roughly 2.6 gallons per 100 miles in MY 2038. The proposal also models a range of additional alternatives.
