The Volvo Car Corporation has begun production of the C30 Electric ( earlier post ); initial deliveries to leasing customers, mainly companies, authorities and governmental bodies, will take place immediately after the summer. The car is recharged from a regular household power socket. A full recharge takes about 7 hours.

Volvo Cars and energy company Göteborg Energi signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation in the area of electrical vehicles and recharge infrastructure. Recharging the C30 BEV pack via a household supply (230V, 16A) will take about eight hours. Volvo is targeting a broader release of the vehicle in 2013.

At the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volvo Car Corporation will unveil the Volvo XC60 gasoline-electric Plug-in Hybrid Concept. This is based on a C30 Electric with a three-cylinder combustion engine producing 60 hp (45 kW) installed under the rear load compartment floor. This is a solution whereby the entire drive package is installed under the hood at the front.

Equipped with a 120 kW induction motor and a Li-ion battery pack, it has a top speed of up to 50 mph, a range in excess of 100 miles and a payload of up to 16,280 lbs. The Jiefang 12-meter hybrid bus can carry 103 passengers and travel at a maximum speed of 85 km/h (53 mph). As the vehicle slows, during braking, the electric motor functions as a generator to recharge the batteries. The Enova drive system will be integrated and branded under the name of Jiefang.

Too bad for America our corporations long ago outsourced that kind of effort and heart. But at least Ford didn’t just shamelessly stiff all their creditors through the scam of corporate bankruptcy like the FAIL crews at GM and Chrysler did.
