They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. And EV owners would become entrepreneurs, selling electricity back to the grid. And indeed, that’s how promoters of vehicle-to-grid technology perceive the EV.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced a trial for a new type of electrolyzer which could see excess renewable energy stored in the gas grid and used to decarbonize Australia’s gas supply. Renewable energy can also be under-utilized when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining, but demand is lower than supply.

What we have not done so well is to ensure that we have a solid base level of generation to supply electricity when there is no sun and no wind. This is turn begs the question where does gas come from and what have we done to ensure a safe and reliable supply. On a good or windy day these produce around 20% of the UK electricity needs.
