The SOLETAIR project ( earlier post ) has produced its first 200 liters of synthetic fuel from solar energy and the air’s carbon dioxide via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The mobile chemical pilot plant produces gasoline, diesel, and kerosene from regenerative hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The SOLETAIR project started in 2016.

Partners from Germany and Finland in the SOLETAIR project are building a compact pilot plant for the production of gasoline, diesel and kerosene from solar energy, regenerative hydrogen and carbon dioxide. A direct air capture unit developed by the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) extracts carbon dioxide from air.

Hydrogen and ammonia contain no carbon; hence, combustion releases no CO 2 emissions. Full-scale engine tests have been recently carried out in Wärtsilä’s engine laboratory in Vaasa, Finland, to assess the optimum engine parameters for running on these fuels.

The EU Innovation Fund will award a grant of €88 million to Neste’s green hydrogen and CO 2 capture & storage project, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Porvoo refinery in Finland. The project introduces carbon capture and storage (CCS) and electrolysis solutions that allow decarbonization of production at the refinery.

The electrical grid also supports the efficient distribution of power and makes use of energy generated through renewable means like wind and solar. We want to license this technology.
