The digesters will use the waste to produce biomethane to be converted into renewable compressed natural gas fuel. This fuel has 88% lower carbon intensity than ultra-low-sulfur diesel. City of Monterey Park (Los Angeles County) will receive $300,000 to upgrade the city’s outdated compressed natural gas fueling station.

California Air Resources Board (ARB) staff has posted five new Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) fuel pathway applications to the LCFS public comments website: two for biodiesel, one for renewable diesel, and two for ethanol. The baseline CI value for gasoline is 95.86 The carbon intensity (CI) for biodiesel from CO is 9.78.

The baseline CI value for gasoline is 95.86 Once the rendered tallow has been converted to renewable diesel, the finished fuel is transported an estimated 7,677 nautical miles by ocean tanker to Los Angeles.

Volkswagen unveiled the Golf Sportwagen HyMotion hydrogen fuel cell hybrid research vehicle demonstrator yesterday at the Los Angeles Auto Show ( earlier post ). The fuel cell and battery power an electric motor adapted from the e-Golf. The fleet of Passat HyMotion vehicles is currently being tested on the streets of California.

James Liao has genetically engineered microorganisms to make higher alcohols from glucose or directly from carbon dioxide. Higher alcohols, especially those with 3-8 carbon atoms, are useful as chemical feedstocks and transportation fuels. Chemical catalysis then converts the harvested aldehydes to alcohols or other chemicals.
