The facility will produce syngas and hydrogen for captive use within BASF’s production Verbund. The production technologies deployed in the syngas plant will mainly utilize CO 2 off-gas, a by-product of the ethylene oxide process and excess fuel gas from steam cracker operations, to manufacture syngas.

The strategy is centred around two main technology routes, as introduced in the first ArcelorMittal Europe climate action report published earlier this year: The use of hydrogen in DRI-EAF (Direct Reduced Iron - Electric Arc Furnace) and, also, the blast furnace. The expansion of its Smart Carbon route, also utilizing hydrogen.

Late in November, the AutomotiveCampusNL in Helmond at Brainport opened the third hydrogen station in the Netherlands. Built by Dutch construction multinational Ballast Nedam in cooperation with Hydrogenics, the station will serve VDL Bus and Coach to test its future fuel cell buses.
