Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium as it prepares to meet fast growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. Ghent is currently preparing to take a second fully electric Volvo model, based on the CMA modular vehicle architecture, into production later this year.

After an intense period of development and testing, the CX45E is now being commercially launched by Van Hool’s North American exclusive distributor ABC Bus Companies Inc. The all-electric CX45E will then be delivered to two North American customers. The CX45E is a fully electric powered coach for the North American market.

The vehicle features a zero-emission VDL electric powertrain alongside a fully electric VDL refuse collection superstructure. Since the end of 2018, DAF CF Electric 4x2 tractor vehicles have been in operation for inner city distribution at leading Dutch and German transport companies and supermarket chains.

By 2040, Volvo Cars aims to be a climate-neutral company. The new electricity contract is also in line with broader ambitions in China to reduce carbon emissions from industry and reduce the carbon footprint resulting from energy generation. These and other measures are part of the climate plan Volvo Cars launched late last year.

Vehicle production will begin in Ghent, Belgium this fall with the first US customer deliveries planned for the fourth quarter of 2021. All Volvo Car model year 2022 pure electric vehicles in the United States will come with 250 kWh of complimentary charging on Electrify America’s network, to be used within the first 3 years.

Volvo Cars will build a third manufacturing plant in Europe, positioning the company well to meet the continued demand from its customers for electric cars and capture future growth potential. The new facility represents an investment of around €1.2 billion; Volvo expects around 20% to be funded by governmental support.

The C40 Recharge will go into production this fall and will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at the Volvo Cars manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium. The company will roll out several additional electric models in coming years and aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars by 2025.
