Diesel is the predominant technology in commercial trucking, school, and transit bus sectors, according to the Diesel Technology Forum’s analysis of data sourced from S&P Global Mobility TIPNet data of vehicles in operation for Class 3-8 as of December 2021. Of the largest trucks (Class 8) in operation, 97% are diesels.

NFI Group subsidiary New Flyer Industries Canada ULC has received new firm orders for 16 battery-electric and fuel cell-electric transit buses from Winnipeg Transit. Four Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric 40-foot transit buses (4 EUs) and four Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric 60-foot transit buses (8 EUs).

Ballard Power Systems and First Mode announced a purchase order for Ballard to supply First Mode with 30 hydrogen fuel cell modules—totaling 3 megawatts—to power several hybrid hydrogen and battery ultra-class mining haul trucks. These trucks are estimated to save 2,600 tons of diesel fuel each year.
