The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is awarding $100 million in Economic Recovery Act funding to 43 transit agencies for projects to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both vehicles and facilities. The project includes quick-charging stations at this terminal layover in route to recharge bus batteries.

The second round is focused specifically on three areas of technology representing new approaches for advanced microbial biofuels, carbon capture, and batteries for electric vehicles. Many methods of producing advanced and cellulosic biofuels are under development to lessen our dependence on petroleum and lower carbon emissions.

So if governments don’t want to see their greenhouse gas reduction targets go up in smoke, they have to take measures to dampen demand for transport. The European mandatory carbon dioxide requirements for new light duty vehicles begin phased implementation in 2012, reaching a limit of 130 g CO 2 /km by 2015.
