Wind-to-Hydrogen Tech Goes to Sea

Cars That Think

Wind and solar parks produce a large portion of their energy. Then, as now, wind farms are operating off the world’s coasts—but not all of these offshore sites are connected to the mainland via underwater power cables. Some of the wind farms instead sit in clusters more than 100 kilometers out at sea.

CESifo: EVs not the best option for reduction in on-road CO2 in Germany given power mix

Green Car Congress

According to a new study published by the ifo Institue Center for Economic Studies (CESifo) in Germany, EVs will barely help cut CO 2 emissions in the country over the coming years, as the introduction of electric vehicles does not necessarily lead to a reduction in CO 2 emissions from road traffic given the current power generation mix.

Highview Power and Encore Renewable Energy to co-develop the first long-duration, liquid-air energy storage system in US

Green Car Congress

With Highview Power’s liquid air energy storage solution, excess or off-peak electricity is used to clean and compress air which is then stored in liquid form in insulated tanks at temperatures approaching -320 ?F

INFINITI says new gasoline-generated EV system (Nissan e-POWER) central to electrification strategy

Green Car Congress

These include fully-electric systems, as well as a gasoline-generated EV system (known as e-POWER at Nissan, earlier post ) in which a gasoline engine generates electrical power stored in a battery (series hybrid), which can then be delivered to all four wheels through a pair of high-output electric motors.

New green hydrogen refueling facility at Berlin-Schönefeld in multi-energy fueling station

Green Car Congress

The demonstration project is designed to produce “green” hydrogen from a surplus of wind and solar power using an electrolyzer, and to use solid storage to create a hydrogen cogeneration plant and hydrogen filling-station infrastructure for buses and cars. By 2016, the H 2 BER partner companies will invest more than €10 million (US$13.7

Stanford study quantifies energetic costs of grid-scale energy storage over time; current batteries the worst performers; the need to improve cycle life by 3-10x

Green Car Congress

Using a new metric—“Energy Stored on Invested, ESOI”—they concluded that batteries were the worst performers, while compressed air energy storage (CAES) performed the best, followed by pumped hydro storage (PHS). The Stanford study considered a future US grid where up to 80% of the electricity comes from renewables.
