Ford is using two four-legged robots leased from Boston Dynamics at its Van Dyke Transmission Plant in early August to laser-scan the plant, helping engineers update the original computer-aided design. Scouter glides smoothly up and down the aisles of the plant, allowing Fluffy to conserve battery power until it’s time to get to work.

The system opens a new door for San Francisco to get to zero emissions by 2035, as each bus will now be able to drive on clean electric power through each of the areas – known as “green zones.” Boston, Louisville, Montreal, Nashville, and Seattle are using Series-ER technology to cut down emissions. Initial SF Muni Green Zone routes.

A much better way to conserve battery power would be to use none of it at all until the system actually had important data to transmit. The system would remain in an ultralow-power sleep mode, or even an open-circuit mode, with no current flowing, until the sensor itself detected an important signal.
