The amended bill, now called the “American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012” and next to be considered by the House, contains 12 extensions outlined in Title IV of the bill, ranging from extension of production credits for Indian coal facilities to benefits for alternative fuels (including algal biofuels) and plug-in vehicles.

Biodiesel, noted the authors, is the most widely used biofuel in diesel engines, and it is currently the main fuel being used or considered to meet renewable fuel requirements for diesel fuel. In California, biodiesel use accounted for 86% of the alternative fuels consumed by the state fleet in 2010.

In 2019, the European Union and the United States both mandated minimum noise requirements for electric vehicles operating at low speeds in order to alert nearby pedestrians: “at least 56 decibels when traveling under 12 mph (20 km/h)” in Europe and “ 43 to 64 decibels when they are moving at less than 18.6 mph” in the United States.
