The approved 2014-2015 Investment Plan Update for the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, which accounts for about 40% of California''s carbon emissions.

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) rolled out its new fleet of 77 buses fueled by propane autogas. The alternatively fueled buses will help the agency reduce its operating costs, and will reduce emissions by 2 million pounds per year. MTS will save about $5.8 MTS CEO Paul Jablonski.

In a recently published whitepaper on hydrogen opposed-piston engines (H 2 -OPE), opposed-piston engine maker Achates Power explained that since there are no carbon molecules in hydrogen fuel, neither unburned hydrocarbons nor particulate matter is a concern for emission control from a hydrogen combustion engine.

Propel launched Diesel HPR across Southern California in August 2015, and consumer adoption of the fuel has risen 300% compared to its former biodiesel product (B20). Propel offers Diesel HPR at 32 locations across California in Los Angeles, Orange Country, San Diego, Inland Empire, Sacramento, Fresno and the Bay Area.

The Energy Commission approved 15 grants totaling more than $5 million to install 475 electric vehicle chargers in communities throughout California, including the cities of San Francisco, Burbank, Torrance and San Diego and the counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles.
