Study finds propane school buses significantly decrease NOx emissions compared to diesel

Green Car Congress

The study was conducted in 2018 by West Virginia University’s Center of Alternatives Fuels, Engines, and Emissions (CAFEE). West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels Engines and Emissions (CAFEE) completed two types of tests at different times of the year during 2018 on four Blue Bird school buses.

DLR: cleaner aircraft emissions reduce the climate impact of contrail cirrus

Green Car Congress

Fewer soot particles in the exhaust stream of aircraft reduces the formation of ice crystals and therefore the climate impact of the resulting contrail cirrus. For example, new engine technologies enable soot emissions to be reduced as a result of combustion at higher temperatures, even using conventional fuels. —Burkhardt et al.

NASA-led study finds 50 vol% biofuel blend reduces soot particle emissions during aircraft cruising; reduced climatic impact of contrails

Green Car Congress

The possibility of reducing the engine exhaust soot emissions by more than half using biofuels paves the way for reducing the climatic impact of contrails. They followed a NASA DC-8 research aircraft at close distances ranging from 30 to 150 meters to measure exhaust composition from each of the inboard engines.

Big Blue Bus receives nearly $900K to purchase 58 new Cummins-Westport Near-Zero NOx engines

Green Car Congress

The ISL G NZ features the same Stoichiometric cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (SEGR) combustion technology, spark ignition, and simple TWC aftertreatment as the ISL G natural gas engine. The recent procurement of both CNG buses and engines will help the agency reduce its current NO x emissions by more than 90% in 2018. Earlier post.).

California ARB posts discussion document for developing Advanced Clean Transit (ACT) regulation

Green Car Congress

Mandate a fraction of bus purchases to be zero emission technology starting in 2018, and set a goal of complete transit fleet transition to zero emission technologies by 2040. Urban bus fleets had to select either a diesel path or an alternative-fuel path.

NUS-led study: beltway to divert diesel trucks in São Paulo improved air quality and public health

Green Car Congress

We combine rich panel data on road congestion, ambient NO x concentrations (as a signature of diesel exhaust), and hospital admissions and deaths. Relative to North America, Europe’s households have significantly adopted diesel cars over gasoline and alternative fuels.
