This is the first increase in average CO 2 emissions from new vans since the regulation came into force in 2011, following a sharp decrease in 2017. A study by researchers from Italy’s Istituto Motori, CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) and Università di Cagliari found that blending butanol with diesel can improve emissions compared to the neat diesel fuel with a low penalty on fuel consumption in a diesel engine operating in a low-temperature combustion mode.
