Xcel Energy has released the preliminary results from its wind-to-battery (W2B) storage project in Minnesota, and termed the technology successful. In October 2008, Xcel began testing a one-megawatt sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery ( earlier post ) to demonstrate its ability to store wind energy and move it to the electricity grid when needed.

The report, “ Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2014 ”, concludes that biomass, hydropower, geothermal and onshore wind are all competitive with or cheaper than coal, oil and gas-fired power stations, even without financial support and despite falling oil prices. Ten companies, agencies and universities have joined an initiative between The Gas Company (TGC), and General Motors to support a ramp up of hydrogen-powered vehicles and associated fueling infrastructure in Hawaii by 2015. The goal is for 20 to 25 hydrogen stations to be installed in strategic locations around the island.

The Yokeless And Segmented Armature (YASA) topology is a new type of axial flux motor that has no stator yoke, a high fill factor and short end windings which all increase torque density and efficiency of the machine. Over the next 12 months, Oxford YASA Motors will be installing systems into new racing vehicles and TTXGP motorcycles.
