While Bloomberg reported it as the “world’s first car engine that runs on ammonia,” other companies have been developing engines that run on the inorganic compound for years.

Volvo’s DME technology will be available in a Volvo D13 13-liter engine, and the company’s I-Shift automated manual transmission will be standard on DME-powered trucks. The company will also introduce its own proprietary LNG engine—North America’s first fully integrated natural gas solution—in VNL day-cabs and sleepers next year.
