Latest GHG Inventory shows California remains below 2020 emissions target; much steeper rate of GHG reductions required

Green Car Congress

California’s latest greenhouse gas data shows that while the state continues to stay below its 2020 target for emissions, there is much more work to do to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. Per capita GHG emissions in California have dropped from a 2001 peak of 14.0

Peking University team develops method for modeling historical global black carbon emissions from motor vehicles with reduced uncertainty

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Peking University have developed a new methodology to model black carbon (BC) emissions from diesel and gasoline motor vehicles. Black carbon is a key short-lived climate change forcer ( earlier post ) and motor vehicles are important sources of BC in the environment. A subsequent emission inventory for Asia estimated total BC emissions from on-road vehicles in this region alone to be 294 and 446 Gg in 2001 and 2006, respectively. Black carbon Emission

California ARB: GHG emissions fell below 1990 levels for first time in 2016; down 13% from 2004 peak; transportation emissions up 2%

The state’s latest Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory shows that California emitted 429 million metric tons of climate pollutants in 2016—a drop of 12 million metric tons, or three percent, from 2015. Senate Bill 32, signed in 2016, requires the state to go even further than AB 32 and cut greenhouse gas emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030—the most ambitious carbon goal in North America. Study Highlights the Importance of Considering Climate Effects of Non-CO2 Emissions from Transport in Mitigation Strategies and Policies

Green Car Congress

The radiative forcing affects of a reduction in non-CO 2 pollutants (dominated by ozone and black carbon) can outweigh CO 2 effects, depending on the replacement energy source, according to a multi-pollutant study by researchers from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the Environmental Defense Fund that examined the impact of a 50% reduction in on-road transportation emissions. Overall trends in the inventory also demonstrate that the carbon intensity of California’s economy, the amount of carbon pollution per million dollars of GDP, is declining. Carbon intensity has dropped 23% from the peak in 2001, and declined an average of 1.9% tons per person in 2001 to 12.0 These climate pollutants the potential to warm the atmosphere hundreds and even thousands of times more than CO 2.

Total US greenhouse emissions were 6,673 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2013, an increase of 2% (127.9 The increase from 2012 to 2013 was due to an increase in the carbon intensity of fuels consumed to generate electricity due to an increase in coal consumption, with decreased natural gas consumption, according to the report. By sector, power plants were the largest source of emissions, accounting for 31% of total US greenhouse gas pollution.

EPA proposes approval of new ozone plans for the two of the worst Air Quality Zones in US: California’s San Joaquin Valley and South Coast

Green Car Congress

The two areas suffer from some of the worst air quality in the country due to a number of factors, such as meteorology, geography, climate and weather. The worst sites in California have demonstrated a 52% improvement in ozone from 1976 to 2010, a 29% improvement in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) from 2001 to 2010, an 84% improvement in carbon monoxide from 1970 to 2009, and a 92% improvement in sulfur dioxide from 1970 to 2009.
