Cradle-to-grave greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for a small gasoline SUV in 2020 were estimated to be 429 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per mile, while the same size EV with 300 miles of range had 48% fewer GHG emissions.

New cars bought through the UK’s scrappage incentive scheme , which began in May, emit on average 10.9% Scrappage buyers were also three times more likely than average to buy the smallest class of car—minis such as the Smart Fortwo—and a third more cars bought through the scheme were larger superminis such as the Hyundai i10.

Meanwhile SUVs continued to grow, posting an increase in registrations of 7.2%, but this growth wasn’t enough to offset the double-digit drops seen by other segments. Conversely, registrations were up by a huge 36% in Romania, due to the Government’s scrappage scheme in Q4-18, which led to an increase in vehicle deliveries in Q1-19. SUVs, vans and sports cars were the only segments to grow during the month, as compact and midsize cars, and MPVs recorded large drops.

The scrappage scheme is only a few days old here in the UK and it has already come under fire. By contrast it states, the Congress scheme is weaker - you can simply buy a new SUV with only slightly better gas mileage and qualify for a $3,500 boost. What do you think of these proposals and the scrappage scheme in general?

The decrease in average emissions in 2010 was lower than in 2009 (5.1%); the results in 2009 were possibly influenced by the economic crisis and the scrappage schemes in some member states. The EU should be favoring more efficient saloons, estates and hatchbacks rather than encouraging gas guzzling, tall and heavy SUVs.
