Steve Mahan got into a Toyota Prius hybrid, drove to the dry cleaner's, picked up some clothes he'd left to be cleaned, and drove home. Steve Mahan is legally blind. The trip was about a mile and a half. He's lost 95 percent of his vision. He did it, though, with a little help from Google.

Possibly the most rapturously received vehicle at last week's Detroit Auto Show was the Porsche 918 RSR coupe, a hybrid race car that isn't even street-legal. And it's about as far from the quintessential Toyota Prius hybrid as you could get.

This represented more of a future state since although the vehicle was capable of executing the actions to get Steve to and from the taco shop, there are still significant legal issues to be worked out before blind people can routinely drive cars autonomously. The California state Senate has approved a similar measure ( SB 1298 ).

These will ultimately include up to 30 vans (Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL) and some 90 electric cars (smart ed, Opel Ampera and Toyota Prius) for private transport. The project foresees the ongoing development of accompanying legal frameworks, norms and standards established on the basis of political procedural recommendations.

Even the Prius and Civic Hybrid are quite different. See my 7/12 post Plug-in Hybrid Bills in Congress Scare Auto Makers ) With the addition of the A123 battery module, a Prius gets between 125 and 175 mpg. They are beginning to do crash testing, and will meet emission requirements, in pursuit of a fully legal, compliant vehicle.
