Only available in the US beginning in March of 2021, the hot-selling Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) was apparently the top-selling PHEV in the US last year. From where I sit, a new PHEV from Jeep outselling the Toyota RAV4 Prime is actually pretty impressive. Flip a coin. Auto Industry Analyst.

But PHEVs are inherently the most complicated of all options. Even the Prius and Civic Hybrid are quite different. See my 7/12 post Plug-in Hybrid Bills in Congress Scare Auto Makers ) With the addition of the A123 battery module, a Prius gets between 125 and 175 mpg. However, there are innumerable ways to do it.

The SSI study captures 12 different PEV models from eight vehicle manufacturers, including GM (Chevrolet Volt); Nissan (LEAF); Tesla (Model S); Ford (Focus EV, C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi); Honda (Fit EV and Accord PHEV); Toyota (Prius Plug-in and RAV4 EV); Mitsubishi (i-MiEV); and Daimler (Smart Fortwo ED).

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) contains both an electric powertrain and an internal combustion engine. Don’t worry about dodging puddles in your Prius! Because EVs run on electricity, the vehicle emits no exhaust from a tailpipe and does not contain the typical liquid fuel components in ICEVs.
