A 2010 NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) analysis concluded that V2V systems potentially could address 79% of all vehicle target crashes, 81% of all light-vehicle target crashes, and 71% of all heavy-truck target crashes annually. These are not, at this time, autonomous or semi-autonomous systems.

But in recent months new players, including the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Daimler AG and battery maker Electrovaya , have come onto the scene as well — making China look more and more likely to give electric cars a strong push into the mass market. Some of these companies are also working on electric models for the U.S. and EU buyers.

Transport for London (TfL) has placed two notices in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) which will create the UK’s largest procurement frameworks to date for electric vehicles and electric vehicle charge point infrastructure. Consultation for the plan closed on 26 February with a final plan to be launched later in 2010.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010.
