DEP also offers rebates of $1,000 for large-battery system plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery-electric vehicles with battery system capacity less than 10 kWh, including models such as the Toyota Prius plug-in and Ford C-Max Energi. A $500 rebate is available for electric motorcycles and scooters.

Toyota’s Prius became the top-selling car in Japan in the months of May and June. It was not all good news however, as fellow Japanese firm Yamaha said its losses in 2009 were likely to be more than four times bigger than expected due to sluggish motorcycle sales and a strong yen.
