Rivian has won a massive $827 million incentive package from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, which will be used to expand the R2 production facility in Normal, Illinois. Rivian’s Georgia plant remains an extremely important part of its strategy to scale production of R2 and R3.

The EV maker will begin building its new R2 electric SUV at its Normal, Illinois facility to accelerate the launch. Meanwhile, Rivian (RIVN) is delaying construction at its new $5 billion EV plant in Georgia, where the R2 was initially expected to be produced. The delay is not expected to be significant.

Rivian has secured $827 million worth of incentives from the state of Illinois to expand its main factory in Normal. Rivian’s Normal, Illinois plant is where it builds the R1S and R1T. But the plant is also set to produce the R2 SUV , a smaller upcoming EV which is set to release in the first half of 2026.

Today, Rivian unveiled the new, less expensive R2 electric vehicle, a more compact SUV than its R1S. Rivian said that it will initially begin production of the R2 in Normal, Illinois , at its flagship manufacturing facility and plans to essentially delay the construction of the Georgia factory as it navigates financial risks.

Two months after first introducing its first-ever lease program for the R1T pickup, Rivian has expanded the offers to now include its other flagship EV – the R1S SUV. At the time, we reported Rivian’s plans to expand the lease program to custom-built R1Ts and, eventually, R1S SUVs. That brings the total to 16 states in all.

Rivian to build new $5 billion electric vehicle factory in Georgia. Rivian an Amazon-backed electric vehicle maker has announced a new $5 billion electric vehicle factory in Atlanta, Georgia. It will be the second factory in Georgia. The electric automaker will start its production at the new plant in 2024. launch in late 2020.
