The project “reFuels - Refueling of fuels” will investigate processes to produce gasoline and diesel fuels from sustainably available raw materials such as plant parts on a large scale. With “bioliq” ( earlier post ) and the “Energy Lab 2.0”, KIT already has two platforms for the production of reFuels.

Volkswagen is offering an incentive of up to €10,000 (US$11,815)—depending upon the model purchased—for the purchase of Euro 6 vehicles in Germany if an older diesel vehicle (Euro 1 to Euro 4 standards) is scrapped at the same time. Applications for the incentives can be made with immediate effect to Volkswagen dealers in Germany.

Partners from Germany and Finland in the SOLETAIR project are building a compact pilot plant for the production of gasoline, diesel and kerosene from solar energy, regenerative hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This reactor was developed by KIT. KIT, INERATEC, and VTT plan to extend their cooperation.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is the coordinator of the new project, in cooperation with TU Kaiserslautern and TU München. Further development of diesel and gasoline fuels now offers the chance of preventing the formation of hazardous exhaust gases directly at their origin, i.e. during combustion in the engine.
