Toyota Australia appears certain to add a petrol-electric hybrid to the new-generation Prado 250 Series SUV line-up as soon as this year. litre ‘i-FORCE MAX’ petrol-electric hybrid was initially put on the backburner for Australia, but that now appears to have changed. Fuel figures for the Prado 250 have yet to be announced.

It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

Hydrogen cars work thanks to the cleanest form of the gas combining with oxygen in a fuel cell to generate electricity. The young, fast-expanding company is part of petrochemicals giant and hydrogen producer Ineos, run by British billionaire and Manchester United stakeholder Jim Ratcliffe. The only waste emitted is water vapour.
