Global Bioenergy Partnership publishes report on 24 sustainability indicators for bioenergy: electricity, heat and transport

The Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) has published its report on sustainability indicators for bioenergy. The report represents the first global, government-level consensus on sustainability indicators for bioenergy and is intended as a resource in helping countries assess and develop sustainable production and use of bioenergy for electricity, heat and transport. In the meantime, the Partnership is proceeding with piloting projects in Indonesia, Colombia and Ghana.

Used Vehicles and the Environment - A Global Overview of Used Light Duty Vehicles: Flow, Scale and Regulation , the first report of its kind, calls for action to fill the current policy vacuum with the adoption of harmonized minimum quality standards that will ensure used vehicles contribute to cleaner, safer fleets in importing countries. Cleaning up the global vehicle fleet is a priority to meet global and local air quality and climate targets.

EPA report to Congress finds a strong scientific and technical foundation for mitigating black carbon emissions

In February, the US and coalition partners Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden and the UN Environment Programme announced the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants, a new global initiative to seize the opportunity of realizing concrete benefits on climate, health, food and energy resulting from reducing short-lived climate pollutants such as BC. The United States contributes about 8% of the global emissions of BC.

IISD Releases Five-Part Series of Reports on Removing Fossil Fuel Subsidies

The International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Geneva-based Global Subsidies Initiative ( GSI ) has issued a five-part series of reports into how nations might remove fossil-fuel subsidies, on the eve of a meeting of G20 finance ministers in Washington this week. The authors note that the US is an important test case for the idea that price-gap evaluations alone are not sufficient to capture the many ways that fossil energy is subsidized.
